Vital Veg, organic farm, winter purslane

Newsletter 15th November 2021

On the farm
A calmer week! This has given us a chance to do some late season painting of outdoor woodwork. Not normally something we would plan for November, but the warm spell has made this possible. One less job for next season!

The relatively warm weather continues to boost our autumn-sown green manures, which makes us very happy. And our tunnel crops are growing apace too. This week we will be harvesting what might be the last of the tunnel-grown celery, along with lots of the wonderful winter purslane.

For those of you unfamiliar with this winter beauty, it has semi-succulent leaves each with a reasonably long, simple stem. We only grow it in winter because it fails to germinate in summer. As if by magic, once the temperatures begin to fall this plant starts to germinate. Its leaves are full of goodness, and it provides a fine change from the other leafy veg at this time of year which are mostly brassicas (cabbages and kales). We are also harvesting our tunnel-grown true spinach and winter lettuce this week, along with mustards and our seasonal salad mix, all of which you can find in our online shop. We are harvesting carrots, parsnips, leeks, swedes, beetroots, kales, cabbages, cauliflowers and purple sprouting broccoli from our field.

Wildlife on the farm
It’s been an exciting week watching Tree Creepers in our woodland. These little marvels hop their way up tree trunks looking for food. They nest under rough, loose bark, and so being
blessed with Tree Creepers is a sign that our wood is really developing well!

This weeks’ potatoes
This weeks’ potatoes are Orla – a great all-rounder. Bake, roast, chip, mash…

Christmas break
It’s getting to be that time of year already! Christmas falls on a Saturday this year. We will be delivering up to Thursday 23rd December.

We will be closed week beginning 27th December and week beginning 3rd January for our annual holiday.

Deliveries begin again week beginning 10th January. If you are a fortnightly customer and you would like to swap weeks in the New Year please let us know.

RETURNING YOUR EMPTY BOXES
It really helps us keep our own prices level if you can return our boxes regularly and in good condition – please wipe them clean and leave them out for us to collect when your next delivery is due. THANK YOU
